Wasn’t it the property taxes levied on the hard-working parents of those students that paid for those desks, as well as the teacher’s salary? Or am I missing something? I have the utmost respect for John McCain. I think he’s a hero and a patriot. But if we were in Vietnam to ensure freedom for Americans, well, things haven’t turned out so great for the Vietnamese. As far as I know, Vietnam is a totalitarian Communist country. Or did I miss something?

Depends a little. Arguably you did indeed miss something but at the same time, there’s a lot of parallels between Vietnam in the last 10 years and China circa 1990-2000. Naturally, you could say that a lot of good things happened in China during that time, but so did a lot of bad things.

When I consider where we were 100 years ago, and even just 40 years ago, I tend to give China a little bit of a break.
