What a tremendous loss to 60 Minutes and to broadcast journalism as a whole. Though he was a great reporter, period, it’s worth noting that his career was bookended by two stories involving race – the 1967 Philadelphia riots and the Duke University rape case. Regarding the latter, can you name anyone who could have navigated the murky racial issues of the case as deftly as Ed? Reflect on that and you start to realize what we have lost.

He will absolutely be missed. What a great presence. What a smart guy. You could see that he put his interviewees at ease. A great loss for journalism — and viewers. My thoughts are with his family. — from someone who’s always been there at the tube at 7 p.m. on a Sunday night.
