There are many versions of this trade story making the rounds now, apparently. Here’s another BP report. Most basics are the same (Manny and cash to Florida. We get Bay and Grabow. Hermida goes to the Pirates), peripheral players vary.If this happens, it might be a steal for the Sox. Bay’s under contract for next year (at $7.5M). He’s had a history of 900+ OPS, but for some reason, he’s seriously underperforming his career this year. (He’s reportedly unhappy with the Pirates having no chance at being a good team again in his lifetime.)
Bay is playing great this year: 22 HR, .282 BA, .894 OPS. It was 2007 that he sucked. This was as good as they could have hoped for. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it will be enough.
