FBI wants to know if journalists have been naughty or nice

I’ll be on “NightSide with Dan Rea” at 8 p.m. on WBZ Radio (AM 1030) to talk about this article in The Washington Times revealing an FBI plan to rate news stories about the agency as “positive,” “negative” or “neutral.” Reporter Jim McElhatton interviewed me for the story. And here is the FBI document (pdf) he unearthed.

Update, Aug. 8. The FBI backs off.

  1. I wasn’t tuned in earlier; did not listen to your Dan Rea interview… IMAGINE, the FBI wondering of sources, leaks, what-ifs, who-done-its? Gosh… what is an investigative journalist to do, not be an investigative journalist? Think ‘Tonkin Gulf Resolution’… THERE/THEN we stopped believing…

  2. Did not Hoover and Deke DeLoach characterize reporters as ‘favorable’ or ‘unfavorable’ back in the day? Journalists who got their own FBI files through the FOIA report repeated characterizations of their work in that way.
What should be next is to ascertain the price of the contract and whether it will be won by somebody’s pal.
