Really, folks, the campaign’s over

Maybe it’s because I have no memory, but I can’t recall a time when there has been this much speculation right after a presidential election concerning who might run in four years. No doubt we can expect Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney to form exploratory committees any minute now.

And we’re already down to people I’ve never heard of.

I suspect it’s a consequence of the expansion of the political press (the aforementioned item is from the Politico, which really does have nothing better to do) and the intense interest in politics generated by an unusually dramatic campaign.

  1. Romney and Palin, Ken and Barbie. Oh sweet Jesus please NO.That image has wrecked my day.

  2. Well, heck, Dan, both Obama and McCain basically ran two-year campaigns. So, in reality we’re talking about who might be doing something by, perhaps, mid-2010. It is still a ways off, but not four years, by any means.

  3. News organizations have ridden the Presidential campaign to big ratings and revenues. Why in the world should they stop covering the story, just because the damn election is over? They’ve gotta pump this up as long as they can — preferably right through 2012. Otherwise, they might have to go report on Afghanistan or try to explain credit-default swaps. Nobody wants that.

  4. Would love to see Huntsman in the race. He’s worse than all the Kennedys, Bushes, and Romneys put together — absolutely living off the business acumen of his father, yet he still would ruin any chance Romney has (wonder if that’s why his name is being floated). Btw, Huntsman is suing some major investment banks for backing out on financing a deal to buy another large chemicals company. I’m sure that will help when it comes time to ask the business community for money. (sarcasm)

  5. Every time I see Tim Pawlenty (he was on “News hour” this evening) I’m impressed with the guy. Why he wasn’t good enough for McCain I don’t understand. Unless of course you have to be a screwball who’s down with the most base elements of RW talk radio. If that’s the case it’s going to be a long time in the wilderness for the GOP.

  6. Time to reread the Introduction to Sidney Blumenthal’s book “The Permanent Campaign.” He presents the reality of both campaigning and governing in the contemporary environment.

  7. One of the more amusing aspects to Scott McClellan’s unreadable book is that he seems to think he coined the term “permanent campaign.”

  8. How was Sarah Palin viewed by her fellow governors and The Republican Governors Association before she was grasped by the McCain campaign to run for Veep? Did she have any standing with them at all? Does she have any now, outside of her position on the ticket?-
