Little Russ and me

My column in the Guardian is a finalist in the Syracuse University Mirror Awards for media commentary. I’m up against David Carr (last year’s winner) and Joe Nocera, both of the New York Times, Rob Owen of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Clive Thompson of Wired (also a winner last year). And yes, there is such a thing as a free lunch, in New York City on June 23.

Tim Russert will receive the Fred Dressler Lifetime Achievement Award. Hmmm … aren’t we almost the same age?

  1. Dan – To paraphrase Woody Allen paraphrasing Groucho Marx, you should probably not hope for an award from an organization that gives a lifetime achievment award to the likes of Little Russ.

  2. What’s funny about it is that probably everyone there has taken a poke at Russert at one time or another. Hey, you think it’s easy to bark out-of-context excerpts from 10-year-old stories at people?

  3. Tim Russert will receive the Fred Dressler Lifetime Achievement Award. The same Tim Russert who takes all phone calls from senior administration officials ‘Off the Record” and admitted it on the witness stand in the Scooter Libby trial. Why would Libby and Cheney pick Russert as the guy who could make or break their cover story?Lifetime achievement? He’s part of the problem. …cocktail weeniesSee if you can get him to talk about it at lunch.

  4. Dan, congratulations! And the Rainbow Room, wow! I’ve never been there. At first, I thought you were going to say the awards luncheon would be in Syracuse. But this is much nicer. Good luck!

  5. Esther: Thanks. Yeah, I’ll be driving the turnip truck down to the Big Apple that day. I’m such a rube that I had no idea the Rainbow Room was a big deal until my editor told me.

  6. DK – be sure to get a few souvenir swizzle sticks (they USED to have very distinctive ones…)
