From 1998 through 2022, I wrote an annual feature called the New England Muzzle Awards. The Fourth of July round-up was intended to call attention to outrages against free speech during the previous year. The Muzzles were published by the Phoenix newspapers of Boston, Portland and Providence until 2012. The Boston Phoenix folded in 2013, and were hosted by GBH News until I decided that 25 years was enough.

Nevertheless, I continue to award Muzzles from time to time.
