Starting in 1998, I began writing an annual feature called the New England Muzzle Awards. The Fourth of July round-up is intended to call attention to outrages against free speech during the previous year. The Muzzles were published by the Phoenix newspapers of Boston, Portland and Providence until 2012. The Boston Phoenix folded in 2013, and since then they’ve been hosted by GBH News.
