When it comes to getting paid for my work, I am fond of quoting Samuel Johnson: “No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money.”
Several years ago I began asking readers of Media Nation for their financial support in the form of $6 a month. As a small token of my gratitude, I send those supporters a weekly email newsletter with a few extra goodies — some exclusive commentary, photography, a round-up of the week’s posts and a song of the week.
My belief is that the newsletter doesn’t cost $6 a month, even though, well, it costs $6 a month. Rather, your $6 covers my work at Media Nation, which is entirely free and has been since I launched it in 2005. Think of the newsletter as a thank-you, not as a product. I’ve made this week’s newsletter free so that you can see what you’re missing.
Year in, year out I’ve been posting three to five pieces of original commentary each week comprising media criticism, updates on local news, politics and whatever else captures my interest. It takes up a lot of my time and attention, and I thank you for reading it.
But whether you read Media Nation on the web or get free email delivery, I hope you’ll consider becoming a supporter. I know that subscription fatigue is real. Keep in mind, though, that Media Nation is free, and all I’m asking for is a small voluntary contribution each month.
If that sounds like a good deal, then please join my Patreon today. Thank you.
