At NECN, all flooding all the time

Can’t get enough water? New England Cable News started its all-flooding-all-the-time coverage at 3 p.m., and will continue until 11 p.m. It’s also streaming live online. When looking out your window just isn’t enough.

    Flooding the airways, eh?

  2. Why not? When cable television came into the picture, it was promised that with 500 channels, there would be a channel dedicated to every taste. A curling channel, a channel about carving wooden ducks, etc. Instead, what happened is that every channel joined a cluster and chased the same demographic, so we got dozens and dozens of news channels, dozens of sports channels, dozens of whatever. No curling channel.

So if NECN wants to differentiate itself by concentrating on the weather during a historical event, then good on them.

Disclaimer: I have been turning to them for the local forecast for a long time.

Oh, me too. Great operation. And this is a huge local story.

  3. But just think of how much more exciting all that rain will make the “watching the grass grow” segments next month.

Did you see NECN’s promo they ran about their weatherpeople — er, meteorologists — shooting them from a low profile so that they looked like pro wrestlers? Over the top.

A curling channel would be a delightful relief from some of the crap that is aired.

I’ve had it. I’m tired of mopping up water, and I don’t have a tiny fraction of the problem those people with flooded homes have. I haven’t suffered any losses or damage. I’m fed up with the copycat news idiots who think that a report, standing knee deep in a flooded street, constitutes good journalism. Maybe once, but not all the time. I also don’t like the official flood 2010 graphics that accompanies all the non stop reports. Give me news. Tell it to me simply, without any of the “its a record” gushing. I’m just tired. For those inside the news game people, I realize this is Nirvana, but report something new, don’t just repeat the same thing over and over because you have the airtime to fill. Whenever I hear the rain beat harder on the windows, I tighten up because I know that it means more water will be coming in faster. It’s not a fun story to me, and certainly not those whose lives are in a shambles because it it. The only thing I’m interested in now is a real forecast that gives me some idea, in realtime, when this is letting up. The rotating radar graphic doesn’t do it because you have to keep struggling to see where things are NOW, and expected in the near future.
