In my latest for the Guardian, I salute John McCain for flying one last mission on behalf of his country. The McCain campaign-fueled orgy of anonymous recriminations over Sarah Palin has proved in a way nothing else could that the media had little to do with bringing down the Republican ticket.

Nial: Chris Matthews is a talk-show host. I have to confess I haven’t paid him any mind since Election Night. And there’s a good chance that the next time I lay eyes on him will be in late 2011.

No wonder so many in the GOP want rid of the Palin problem:“…while quite popular among the party base, she faces deep resistance from voters outside of it, including many of the groups (independents, college graduates, residents of the coasts) who turned most sharply away from the GOP in last week’s rout.”That’s from the Hotline blog at National Journal. Another telling quote about public perception of Palin’s fitness to serve as president:“While 74% of Republicans thought Palin was qualified, just 35% of independents and 9% of Democrats agreed …. and while 40% of voters without college education thought she could step in, just 35% of college graduates agreed. Fully 63% of college graduates rated her unqualified.”Somehow I doubt that another four years as governor of Alaska will convince a majority of independents and conservative Democrats to support a Palin candidacy in 2012.

An “open door,” for Sarah: and Newt, Mitt, Jindal, and perhaps a mystery man/woman. What a crew. Brooks today wrote about what being in the wilderness is like. A two-tiered GOP attempting to conflate religious nuts and neocons. The 6000 year old earth crowd with the big-spend, big war nerds. And no more coastline other than Paris Island, and Savannah. Bush trashed eveything, the party included.

This just in…The on-air ‘discussion’ held by non-person-non-pundit chris Matthews about Palin mistakuing Africa for a country has been discredited; ‘Eisenstat’, the MSNBC ‘source’ in the ‘McCain’ campaign is an imaginary person. ‘Wasn’t properly vetted’, says MSNBC and others Ya THINK?). Especially odd is that this SAME fictional being has been exposed as a hoax BEFORE.However, MSNBC statnds by the assertion made by said imaginary person that Palin made that gaffe despite her denials that it happened.DK – they’re listening to those voices in their heads again, aren’t they?

My dear PP:You have completely misunderstood what happened. This AP story, posted on the Fox News site, will set you straight.It was Fox News’ Carl Cameron who reported that Palin didn’t know that Africa was a continent. Apparently he is standing by his story, as Fox News is denying that the fake Eisenstadt was his source. So the Palin story has not been debunked at all, and this has nothing to do with MSNBC. As much as you wish it did!For the record, I do not believe Palin didn’t know Africa was a continent. But the Eisenstadt hoax has nothing to do with that.

PP: Slight correction. MSNBC fell for the Eisenstadt hoax, and I don’t want to suggest otherwise. All I meant was that the hoax has nothing to do with Cameron’s reporting.BTW, Media Nation was on the case Tuesday! See my reference to Eisenstadt near the end of my Guardian column.
