McCainiancs nervous over the prospect that their man might pick Mike Huckabee as his running mate needn’t worry — Huckabee took himself out of the running earlier today by making a grotesque joke about Barack Obama, guns and assassination. Reuters reports:
Former Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee, interrupted on Friday by a loud crash as he spoke to the National Rifle Association, joked that the noise was Democratic candidate Barack Obama falling off a chair as he dodged a gun aimed at him.
“That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He was getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him, and he dove for the floor,” Huckabee told the NRA convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in comments that aired on CNN.
What a sense of humor, eh?

Huckabee’s “crack” shows as much judgment on his part as that of someone ON crack. In this day and age, to suggest there’s something funny in the notion of pointing a gun at any political candidate, Democrat or Republican, black or white, is clearly irresponsible. If Huckabee were a professional comic, as opposed to a political candidate and a supposed “man of God”, it might have been taken as merely a poorly considered joke gone wrong. As it was, even an audience of activist gun owners all but groaned at this display of bad taste, ill will and dreadful leadership. Even they don’t want be painted into a corner with Huckabee if some lunatic who thinks like the preacher-man apparently does decides to put his words into action.

Grotesque? Gov. Huckabee was merely poking fun at the paranoid, self-aggrandizing Obama and his handlers who seem to believe that a “typical white person” who is “clinging to guns and religon” might be lurking just around the corner. Of the perceived looming violence, there’s this gem: “It is the sad reality this day and age that Mr. Obama’s African-American heritage is a cause for very violent and hated reactions from some people,” said Sen. Dick Durbin. Sheesh, under Durbin’s theory Jack and Bobby Kennedy must have been of the “dark Irish”.

As somebody that has followed Mike Huckabee very closely (and has nothing but contempt for him), I can say that he didn’t intend anything negative in his comments. Huckabee often just says the first thing that comes to mind, and he completely lacks the ability to self-sensor. Although I have serious reservations about his ruthlessness as a politician skillfully masked by an Opie-like demeanor, he is still a good person. It wasn’t meant as a joke about Obama shooting anyone, or anyone shooting Obama – it was a very poorly worded joke that makes absolutely no sense (the kind of joke the Huckster is prone to making).It will probably disqualify him as a VP candidate, which I could not be more pleased about – but he meant no harm. Live by the folksy wit, die by the folksy wit I guess.

isn’t it amazing that this ‘fish’ guy gets his depends all in a knot over some invisible pundit’s aimless air-filling remark about Ted K and McCain, but has nothing but love and excuses for Huckabee’s crack … ? can you say “partisan hack”?

There are people who would vote for him *because* he said that.I was listening to conservative talk radio today (in the hills, so bad reception), and a caller intimated people should not vote for Obama because he’s more likely to be assassinated.Just sayin’ in all.
