Globe porn link

I’m working in a public library right now, so obviously I have to be very careful about what’s on my screen. It might get me kicked out, for instance, if a librarian notices that I’ve gotten too wrapped up in today’s “New England in Brief” column in the Boston Globe.

Because I might read the item headlined “Fire destroys another adult video store.” And I might notice that some bonehead (or possibly some boneheaded software algorithm) built in a link to Amazing.net, the adult video store in question. And then I might click on it, and — well, you’ll see.

Update: Media Nation gets results! As Adam Gaffin notes, the link has now been removed.

We must take up arms to defend the Boylston Street location! Courage, lads!

Damn, there you go ruining it for the rest of us! Some prude must’ve read your post and now they’ve unlinked the name of the chain (although you’d have to be really slow not to be able to figure out the Web address).

I believe it was amazon.net. Have you ready your Globe today?

Sorry for the tangential connection here, but speaking of obscene, here’s obscene: on the NYT main web page http://www.nytimes.com/index.html?partner=rssnyt) is a picture of a beautiful, beautiful dead baby, pictured in her casket. (I take this to be the child who recently died due to the ineptitude of the social service agencies who were supposed to be safeguarding her.) If you click on the pic, (as I did, wishing to know how this story is progressing,) you get an offer to look at the accompanying article by subscribing to the Times Elect or Select or something… just leave your credit card number if you want to see the article about the dead baby we used as a tease on the main page. That really frosts me. How low can they go?Leslie

Leslie — One of those unfortunate coincidences. The photo of the dead child accompanies Joyce Purnick’s “Metro Matters” column — which, like all Times columns, is now part of TimesSelect. But someone should have been more sensitive about what was used to tease Purnick’s column.

Two Amazing fires now! Hmm smells…suspicious. I wonder if smoke-damaged merchandise will show up soon in Building 19. Maybe getting out of brick-and-mortar–why pay rent! And buying that stuff in person is so embarrassing. Not that I’d know of course…Anyway, as long as World Class Billiards didn’t get damaged. Dat’s a lovely joint. It has those real three-cushion billiards tables and some great local talent.Too bad, that place was a bachelor’s dream: a porn store, a pool hall and a Japanese steakhouse all in one building! If they rented apts upstairs, and I were single, I’d have moved in and never gone out but for an occasional breath of fresh Rte 1 air…When I use the Peabody library, I do make it a point to have a look at what people are doing on line, so that I may cluck in a disapproving manner. They have wifi now though, so if you have a laptop you can situate yourself in a corner and look at the good stuff without anybody seeing.A few years ago a porn shop in Waltham used to run a tiny ad in the Globe sports pages. After the Gloge huffed and puffed about the dangers of pornography one too many times people pointed out the hypocrisy of taking porno ad revenue so rather than changing their editorial position they dumped the postage-stamp-sized ad. Forsaking money for principle! Why we love the Globe so.

Who the hell reads Globe briefs on-line … ? … still, if they were helpful enough to offer a link, why make a stink?

  8. Paul

Dan please DON’T read the Globe online in the library today! If you thought yesterday’s “subtle” link was racy, wait ’til you see today’s front page of the Living|Arts section!!!

I once saw a much more egregious example of this in the New York Times, of all places. I was reading an article about the terrible working conditions at Wal-Mart, which included the allegation that the cashiers sometimes wet their pants because they weren’t allowed to take bathroom breaks.Just below the article was an ad for jobs at Wal-Mart.

“Forsaking money for principle! Why we love the Globe so.”If it was a full page ad, as opposed to a paltry stamp-sized one, you can be sure the Globe decision would have gone the other way.

Funny because for years newspapers strove to avoid running an article about a plane crash next to an ad for some airline. I guess the rule book goes out the window when it comes to web-based journalism.
