I finished this today. My God. I am just blown away. I decided to take it a day at a time even though the whole thing had been posted earlier in the week. I found myself hoping it would end on an optimistic note. Spoiler alert: it did.

  1. I think the question isn’t whether it will win a Pulitzer. I think the question is how many.

  2. Tremendous story. I just finished reading part 1, and will read he second part tomorrow.

Thanks Dan for posting this article.

And here’s a the NYT public editor’s take on the series. http://publiceditor.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/12/12/invisible-child-behind-the-scenes-before-and-after/ The most pertinent line: “As for the series itself, it must be noted that it takes enormous resources, especially in staff time, to make this kind of project happen.” Makes me proud that we’re able to do what we can do at The Daily Item; makes me weep that there are loads of stories out there that are variations on this theme. Here’s one that we were able to tell in part: http://www.itemlive.com/news/lynn-student-perseveres-to-win-big-scholarship/article_08cb72cc-5b0c-11e3-922f-001a4bcf887a.html

@Victor: That is an amazing story. Thank you for sharing it. I’m glad to see he’s coming to Northeastern.

  4. Definitely and deservedly timed for Pulitzer judging.
