Globe op-ed page gets bloggy

I’d think this was a good idea even if Media Nation wasn’t featured in the debut. The Globe op-ed page today unveils “VoxOp,” a round-up of opinion from outside sources such as local blogs and student newspapers.

One suggestion: It would be more useful to online readers if the items were attached to the permalinks of the actual blog posts rather than to the home pages.

By the way, the Herald has been quoting bloggers in its “Monday Morning Briefing” for quite a while, though none this week.

Barf. The op-ed page should be the last bastion of informed, coherent, expansive thought, even if you’re trying to paste those adjectives onto the likes of Jeff Jacoby or those political consultants who keep cluttering up the page. I looked at the page today and almost called up the Globe to cancel my subscription, because they finally have killed off so much news as to be not worth 50 cents.

Giving home page rather than permalink amounts to a boost for the blog itself as opposed to a reference for the quote — I wonder if this is the intent.

This is a lame gimmick. Are they trying to look modern? These quotes don’t teach anyone anything new (no offense Dan!). Is this a cheap ploy to appear modern or hip and gain readers? Cause it just looks cheesey and amatuer.

Anon 1:13: As opposed to what one normally finds on a typical newspaper op-ed page? 😉

Scott Zoback at Worcester Magazine has been doing this a while with his Blog Log. Good writing is good writing – why not highlight it? Blogs ARE editorial pages, at their best functioning level.

I’d rather a good blog entry than another paid Heritage Foundation propaganda piece masquerading as an editorial.
